A
very good example of the principle of adding value to your produce is the
experiences of David Gregory and partner, Carole Maher.

David
Gregory and partner Carole Maher are growing lavender at Grose Vale, on the
outskirts of Sydney. They produce about $10,000 worth of lavender a year from
their 0.5 ha plot but convert this into over $100,000 of added-value income by
using their former skills as a banker and advertising executive to sell a range
of tourist products involving lavender including sprays and hand lotions .

Carole
Gregory-Maher develops prototypes for all her products and uses chemists in
Melbourne and Wyong, on the New South Wales central coast, to help
commercialise them. David Gregory has now adapted to a rural lifestyle from a
former life as a Merchant Banker and is finding a whole new range of skills
that he can apply to his new enterprise. This entrepreneurial couple clearly
demonstrate the skills of adding value to an agricultural enterprise.
You
can read about the details of David and Carole's story in the Crop Options Module
of the Farming Smarter programme.
